Spine Treatment with MedX
The MedX Program offers the only FDA registered medical strengthening devices in the United States for strengthening both the lumbar and cervical areas of the spine. Peer-reviewed research has shown that patients who have used MedX machines for cervical and lumbar spine problems recover faster than with other conservative treatments, even after multiple failed attempts at other forms of therapy.
The cervical and lumbar MedX machines are the only machines that truly isolate the spine musculature. When the spine is isolated, we use the machine the find the patient’s pain-free range of motion and strength. We use this data to establish a baseline to determine the level of impairment and compare the patient’s strength and range of motion to their norms based on age, gender, height and weight. This initial test gives the patient immediate visual feedback and answers many questions they have had for so long.
What is the intent of the treatment?
Low back pain and neck pain are two of the most common musculoskeletal problems that plague patients globally, and they are two of the more difficult to treat. Patients with neck and back pain make up a high percentage of physical therapy patients and, to treat them well, therapists will need a solid understanding of the patient’s spinal anatomy, individual impairments, movement dysfunctions and functional limitations. Anatomical baseline and structural abnormalities are easy to identify with imaging studies such as X-rays or MRIs. Skilled therapists can also identify movement dysfunctions and functional limitations through patient observation and comprehensive interviews. However, even the most highly trained therapist will have difficulty accurately evaluating the true strength of the neck and back muscles. This is where the MedX equipment comes into play.
Once the initial test is complete, we use the results to develop an individualized strengthening program on the MedX machine. This program can last for 4-8 weeks with expectations for a pain-free lifestyle when completed. This program takes expertise from the therapist and the desire to work and get better from the patient. With both of these, success can be achieved.
What are the benefits?
While there are a variety of causes of musculoskeletal pain, it is generally accepted that weak muscles often lead to painful muscles and joints. When lacking sufficient strength in the muscles that literally support our skeletal system, our joints become compressed and degenerate much more rapidly than when supported well by strong, balanced muscles. Additionally, when our muscles are weak, but we continue to ask them to do the job of healthy, strong muscles, these muscles become over-worked and strained which often leads to injury. The results are manifested as painful muscle spasms, tendinitis, trigger points, stress fractures, ligamentous sprains, discogenic pain and more. Therefore, strengthening of the spinal musculature is crucial in treating and preventing back and neck pain.
The MedX program has proven effective with testimonials from thousands of people around the world, however, it is not guaranteed for all neck and back pain sufferers. The treatment itself is safe and may be a good option for those with neck or back pain, especially if other therapies have not worked in the past.
What conditions can it treat?
The MedX program may be beneficial for those who suffer from:
- Muscular neck or back pain
- Degenerative disc disease
- Lumbar strain/spasms
- Whiplash injury
- Sciatica or radicular pain
